How to Clean a Toilet in Three Easy Steps

We get it – cleaning the toilet is one of the least appealing household tasks. But since your toilet is one of the most-visited places in your house, it’s important to eliminate the bacteria that can congregate here.

Following is a simple, three-step process to get the job done right! We’ll show you what supplies you need, how to do a top-to-bottom cleaning, pro tips, and even a bonus tip. So let’s get started!

ONE: Gather Your Supplies

What you’ll need:

  • Eye protection
  • Gloves
  • Paper towels (or washable cloths, if preferred)
  • Disinfectant wipes
  • Toilet bowl brush
  • Toilet bowl cleaner

Before you begin cleaning, remove anything on the toilet tank or around the toilet base. This will make your job easier and protect items from any splashing water.

Wearing your eye protection and gloves, place the toilet seat in the closed position. If your toilet seat removes for cleaning, go ahead and do that. If not, continue by using a disinfectant wipe to carefully wipe the area around the hinges. Next, lift the cover and wipe both sides. Repeat with the ring and leave the seat in the upright position.

Squirt toilet bowl cleaner underneath the rim. Take the toilet bowl brush and scrub under the rim and the inside of the bowl.

Pro tip: Place the handle of the toilet bowl brush on the rim and close the toilet seat ring and cover. This lets the brush drip dry while you continue cleaning. Make sure the brush does not touch the underside of the cover, as cleaning solutions may degrade the finish on your toilet seat.

THREE: Clean the Outside of the Toilet

Starting with the tank lid, take a disinfectant wipe and carefully wipe the lid’s top and sides. Move to the handle and sides of the tank, wiping as you go. Continue working toward the floor, wiping the outer bowl, trap area, and base. Replace disinfectant wipes as needed.

Finally, remove the toilet bowl brush from underneath the seat and replace in its holder.

Pro tip: Resist the urge to let the disinfectant wipes pile up on the floor until you’re finished. Tossing them immediately as they soil prevents bacteria transfer.
